As professional driving instructors, maintaining high standards is essential for both our reputation and the safety of Ontario's roads. Here are key best practices shared within our community:
Always display your MTO instructor license prominently in your vehicle during lessons. This builds trust with students and complies with Ontario regulations. Remember that approximately 1,000 formal complaints are filed against unprofessional instructors each year.
Maintain proper driving instructor insurance (6D Endorsement) at all times. This specialized coverage protects both you and your students during training sessions and is legally required for all Ontario driving instructors.
Develop and follow comprehensive lesson plans for each student. A structured approach ensures consistent quality education and helps students progress systematically toward road test readiness and lifelong safe driving habits.
Avoid making unrealistic claims about passing rates. The average G2 test passing rate in Ontario is approximately 55%. Focus instead on your qualifications, teaching methodology, and commitment to student success.
Becoming a licensed driving instructor in Ontario requires meeting specific qualifications and completing several steps. Understanding this process helps maintain the integrity of our profession:
Hold a valid Ontario driver's license (other than G1, G2, M1, M2, or M(L)), be at least 18 years old, and have no demerit points on your driving record.
Pass both the G1 knowledge test and a Class G road test specifically for instructor qualification. These demonstrate your comprehensive understanding of driving rules and advanced driving skills.
Complete a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check through your local police service or an authorized provider to ensure regulatory standards are met.
Complete an MTO-approved 160-hour driving instructor course covering teaching techniques, collision avoidance, defensive driving, and the Highway Traffic Act.
Submit your completed application to a DriveTest Centre, pay the licensing fee, and receive your temporary instructor license while awaiting your official card.
Note: The entire process must be completed within one year of application. Instructor licenses must be renewed every three years before March 31 of that year.
